James Martin and Barbara Jean MacGruder were married at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, while he was serving in the United States Army. Barbara Jean MacGruder graduated from the Miami-Jacobs Business College in Dayton, Ohio, and worked as a secretary. She also taught private piano students for a number of years, and wrote several books of piano teaching pieces which have been published by Kjos Publishing Company. James Martin was a designer for Systems Research Laboratories in Beavercreek, Ohio, before his retirement. He also served for a number of years on the Mad River Township (Montgomery County) Volunteer Fire Department, and served as Chief of the department.

Alexander Arthur Martin's family moved from Providence, Rhode Island, to Cleveland, Ohio, while he was still young. The family lived at 122 Whitney Avenue. He was the first person to enlist at the new Cleveland recruiting station at 64 Public Square, enlisting in the Navy on December 28, 1899. He underwent introductory training at Coaster's Harbor Island, Rhode Island, where he was stationed on the U.S.S. Constellation. He also served on the U.S.S. Essex, an old ship used for training, then on the U.S.S. Wabash, a stationary receiving ship at Chelsea, Massachusetts. Next, he went to the receiving yard at Brooklyn, and then to San Francisco, where he was assigned to the U.S.S. Wisconsin. While in San Francisco, he met President McKinley at a ball. He visited many foreign ports during his time in the Navy, and took part in naval exercises during the Boxer Rebellion in China and the Philippine Insurrection. He was discharged from the Navy on his birthday in 1904.

After his marriage to Jessie Duff, the family lived for some time in Cleveland, and later moved to Erie, Pennsylvania, and Fostoria, Ohio. They were living in Cleveland, Ohio, at the time of the 1910 census. William Duff, cousin of Jessie Duff Martin, was living with them. In 1920, they were living at 9001 Macomb Avenue, Cleveland. The family finally settled in Dayton, Ohio, where Alexander was employed by the National Cash Register Company. He built numerous ship models as a hobby, and won several prizes for his models. He was a member of Linden Avenue Baptist Church and the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of the Masonic Lodge, becoming a Prince of the Royal Secret, thirty-second degree, on November 11, 1944.

Alexander died at Good Samaritan Hospital in Dayton, Ohio. At the time of his death, he was living at 210 Cambridge Avenue in Dayton. Alex and Jessie are buried at Memorial Park Cemetery, Dayton, Ohio, in Section 12, Lot 3, Block 12.

Howell Joshua Magruder changed his last name to MacGruder sometime before his marriage in 1922. He felt that this form of the name would be closer to the original Scottish form. He enlisted in the United States Naval Reserve Forces on 1 August 1918, and was called to active duty on 7 August 1918. His address at the time of his enlistment was 1248 Warder Street, Springfield, Ohio. He was at the Great Lakes Naval Training Station in Illinois from 17 August 1918 to 11 September 1918. He was then sent to the Naval Operating Base in Norfolk, Virginia, until 14 September 1918. He served on the U.S.S. Massachusetts until 11 November 1918. His rank was Fireman 3rd Class. He also served on the U.S.S. Harrisburg. He was released from active duty on 26 September 1919, and received his honorable discharge on 30 September 1921. He was an electrician by trade. Emma (Mayme) Kohn went to work at an early age, first in a laundry and later in a factory. She later played the piano at a silent movie house while her brother Clyde sang. The Howell MacGruder family was one of the first families in Dayton to own a television set. At the time of the 1930 census, the family was living at 35 Quentin Avenue, Dayton, Ohio. After the death of Howell MacGruder, Emma Kohn MacGruder went to work as a switchboard operator at Dayton's Central YMCA, retiring in 1965. The cemetery where he and his wife are buried, Glen Haven Memorial Gardens, is near Donnellsville, Clark County, Ohio.

Joseph's middle name on his baptismal record and marriage record is Hormisdas. The witnesses in the baptismal record were Joseph Boucher and Marie Duclos. At the time of his naturalization in 1894, Joseph Martin was living at 341 Case Avenue, Cleveland, Ohio. At the time of the 1900 Census, the Joseph Martin family was living at 122 Whitney Avenue, Cleveland, Ohio (see 1900 Ohio Census, Cuyahoga County, Roll 1254, Book 2, Page 80a). Living at the residence were Joseph, his wife Mary, Eva M., William, and Irene Martin, and Florence Burrows, said to be Joseph's sister-in-law. In 1910, the family was living at 7540 Star Avenue, Cleveland. They were living on East 103rd Street, Cleveland, in 1920. He is probably the Joseph Martin listed in the 1930 census as an inmate at the Warrensville Correction Farm, Cuyahoga County, Ohio. Joseph Martin died at his residence, 5144 Oakmont Drive, South Euclid, Ohio.

According to the Julian family, Joseph Martin fell off a bicycle and hit his head, causing him some mental problems, although he had been very bright before the accident. He always wore a Derby hat in bed and always wore long underwear.

At the time of the 1861 census, Charles Duff was living at Bothy of Charleston, Liff and Benvie, Angus, and his occupation was given as ploughman. In their 1868 marriage record, Charles Duff and Ann Nolan were both recorded as living in Lochee and working as farm servants in the parish of Liff and Benvie. On the death record of their first child, Alexander, in 1868, Charles' occupation was given as police constable in Dundee. Charles apparently came to the United States before the rest of his family, as his record in the Declarations of Aliens (Volume 8, p. 398, 9 October 1880) in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, states that he arrived in the United States in September 1868. His wife and children arrived in New York from Glasgow on 31 October 1872, on the S.S. California. The California was built by Alexander Stephen & Sons of Glasgow and was launched on 12 March 1872. Its maiden voyage was 15 June 1872, and it was scrapped in 1904. Charles probably came first to find employment, and then returned to Scotland to prepare his family for emigration. He is listed in the 1871 census of St. Mary, Dundee, with the occupation of police officer. There is no date on the census record. Again, he must have returned to the United States before his wife and children. He is probably the Charles Duff listed on the passenger manifest for the S.S. Anglia, which arrived in New York from Glasgow on 16 September 1871. On 7 August 1883, Charles was appointed a patrolman (Patrolman 160, at $840 per year) with the Cleveland Police Department, and took his Oath of Office the same day. His previous occupation was given as "paver," and his address was 6 Home Street.

On Jessie Helen Duff's birth record, Ann's place of birth was stated to be Ireland. In June 1897, Ann Nolan Duff returned to Scotland, presumably to visit her mother and other relatives. Traveling with James and Letitia Hutchison, the in-laws of her daughter Mary, she sailed on the ship State of Nebraska on 5 June and arrived in Glasgow on 14 June. She remained in Scotland until late August 1897, sailing home on 25 August on the ship City of Rome and arriving in New York on 5 September. Her nationality was listed as Scottish on the outgoing passenger list and as Irish on the return passenger list. When she arrived in New York on her return trip, she declared that she had $5.00 and a ticket to her final destination, Cleveland.

Maxime was described in the census report as a "journeyman" (day worker). In the 1875 Rhode Island census, Maxime's name is given as Michael (age 45), and the family was living in Coventry. Also listed are Louisa B. (age 44), Michael (son, age 22), Aulet (age 21), Mary (age 14), Joseph (age 15), Ida (age 11), and Louisa (age 7), all born in Canada. The census of 1900 reports that Maxime and Louise Martin emigrated in 1868. The 1920 census record of Maxime's children, Marguerite Ashey and Maxime Martin, indicates that they emigrated in 1869. Maxime and Louise Martin's son, Alexander, was naturalized on 28 December 1891, at which time he stated that he arrived in the United States on 3 May 1869. In addition to the listed children, there may have been another daughter, Mary (1869-1880).

Louise Boucher Martin reportedly ran a boarding house in Providence after her husband's death. In the 1880 census of the village of Harris, Coventry, Kent County, Rhode Island, there is a Martha Martin, age 49. Living with her were her daughter, Ida, age 15; son, Joseph, age 19 (a machinist); daughter-in-law Aggie, age 20, and; granddaughter Mary, age 1. If this is the same family, then it would appear that Joseph Martin had been married previously, before marrying Maria Jean. She was living at 499 N. Main Street, Providence, in 1885. Her son, Maxime, lived there as well. At the time of the 1900 Census, she was living at 376 Richmond Street, Providence, Rhode Island (Roll 1507, Book 1, Page 2a). She was still living at that address in 1907, as were Maxime Martin and David Plante, her son-in-law. At the time of the 1910 census, she was living on 276 Richmond Street, Providence. Living with her were son Maxim (age 56, widowed); son-in-law David Plante (age 47, widowed); her grandson David Plante, Jr. (age 24), and; her granddaughter Antoinette Plante (age 13). The census indicates that she emigrated in 1867. In the records of the Potvin Funeral Home, West Warwick, Rhode Island, her residence at the time of her death is given as Fiskeville.

The 1880 census shows Louis Jean living in Lincoln, Rhode Island, and working as a carpenter. The census also shows two nieces, Emilie and Mathilde Plamindon (?) living with the family. All his children, with the exception of Maria, were living with him. The baptismal record of his daughter, Maria, also gives his occupation as carpenter. Louis and his family returned to Canada, as his family is listed in the 1901 census of St. Norbert. The census indicates that they returned to Canada in 1882.

Alexander Duff was listed as a farm servant at Ross, parish of Errol, Perthshire, on his marriage record, and his wife was a resident of Kinfauns. They were married by the Rev. David Black, minister of Kilspindie, at the parish manse. At the time of the 1841 census, both Alexander Duff and Catherine Edward were farm servants at Pitrodie Farm, in the parish of Kilspindie. Alexander's age was given as 17, and Catherine's as 20. At the time of the 1861 census (which gives his birthplace as Kinfauns), the family was living at Muirloch Cottages, parish of Fowlis-Easter, Perthshire, and Alexander's occupation was given as a ploughman. In 1871, the family was living on the Camperdown estate near Lochee, where Alexander was an estate laborer. He is listed on the property valuation rolls of 1871/2, appearing for the last time on the 1897/8 rolls. The property, owned by the Earl of Camperdown, was the cottage on Butter's Loan. At the time of the 1881 census, they were living at Butters Loan Cottage, Liff and Benvie, Lochee, and Alexander was again listed as an estate laborer. Living with Alexander and Catherine Duff were their children; James (railway laborer), Helen (jute factory worker), and Elizabeth (jute factory worker), and his mother, Jessie (Janet Will) Duff. In his death entry, he was described as a woodworkman. The information was given by his son, James Duff, of Wemyss Castle, Fife. In the marriage records of his daughter Elizabeth (1882) and his son Robert (1876), his occupation was given as forester.

The witnesses on the marriage register were Patt Kielly (Kelly?) and Biddy Noland, probably Catherine's sister Bridget. They probably paid 14 shillings to be married. Francis and Catherine Nolan left Ireland for Scotland sometime between 1844 and 1847. In 1861, the family was living at 170 Shuttlefield Close, Perth, and Francis was described as an agricultural laborer. In 1871, the family was living at 103 South Street in Perth. Francis' age was listed as 54. Francis became a member of the Archconfraternity of the Holy Family at his church, St. John the Baptist, Perth, on 29 July 1877. Both the 1860 and 1870 censuses for Hardin County, Ohio, give his birthplace as Virginia, but his death record gives his birthplace as what appears to be "Fairfield". The entry in the 1860 census of Hardin County, Ohio, includes George Coon (age 35, born Virginia), Hannah Coon (age 27, born Ohio), John Coon (age 6, born Ohio), Sally Coon (age 7, born Ohio), and Rachel Coon (age 2, born Ohio). The 1870 census of Pleasant Township, Hardin County, Ohio, records the family as follows: John (sic) Kohn (age 45, born Virginia), Hannah Kohn (age 38, born Ohio), Rachel Kohn (age 10, born Ohio), William Kohn (age 8, born Ohio), Nancy Kohn (age 4, born Ohio), and Eliza Kohn (age 4, born Ohio). In the "History of Middlesex County," James is listed as a warden and pathmaster for the year 1845. He is recorded as having owned land in Middlesex County, Ontario. The land was in McGillivray Township, Lot 23, Concession 9, and was purchased on 17 Dec 1842. His brother, George, purchased the neighboring lot, No. 22, on the same day; their brother, John, purchased Lot No. 20 on 18 Mar 1844 . However, James Cotter is also listed on the 28 September 1837 map of McGillivray Township as owning that same lot number. James Cotter appears in the 1848 census of Canada West (Ontario). He is listed on page 3, McGillivray Township, Huron (now Middlesex) County. Around 1848, James Cotter moved to Clark County, Ohio. He filed a Declaration of Intention for Naturalization in Clark County, Ohio, on 20 March 1861, but apparently never completed the naturalization process. At the time of the 1850 census, James and Maria (name given as Mary in the census) were living in Springfield, Clark County, Ohio. James' age was given as 26, and his occupation was sawyer. Maria's age was given as 25. At the time of the 1860 census, the family was living in German Township, Clark County, Ohio. Included in the census is Anna Cotter, aged 66. He is listed in the 1880 census of Clark County, Ohio. James Cotter was a member of The Champion City Guard, Company A, Seventh Infantry, Ohio National Guard, during the Civil War. He purchased land from William T. Haley in the city of Springfield, Ohio, on 13 July 1855, and from James T. Warder on 14 December 1870, in Springfield Township. Around 1881, the James Cotter family moved to Illinois, settling near Claremont in Richland County. James Cotter purchased land from Robert B. and Ellen Patrick in Richland County, on 27 November 1882. The property is described in the deed as the northwest fourth of the southeast quarter of Section 26, township 4, North Range (numbered 14 west), "containing 40 acres, more or less." The property was sold by his heirs to Mary Cotter Melrose, James's daughter, for $800 on 28 November 1902, following the death of James's second wife in August 1902. James is buried in Ferncliff Cemetery, Springfield, Ohio, in Lot 242 of Section L. This plot was purchased by Ann Cotter on 18 April 1899.

In the christening record of his son, William (1813), James was described as a workman in Nether Durdie, in the parish of Kilspindie. This may be the James Edward who was born in Forfar in 1787, the son of James Edward and Jean Grant.

The marriage record of Thomas Lewis and Margaret Williams states that they were both from the parish of Cilcennin in Cardiganshire, Wales. According to the obituary of his son, David D. Lewis, the Thomas Lewis family emigrated to the United States in 1834, and lived in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, "for a good many years" before moving on to Gallia County, Ohio, where many emigrants from Cardiganshire had settled in the first half of the 1800s. However, abstracts of passenger lists of the port of Baltimore, Maryland, show the family arriving between 1 July and 30 September 1839. At the time of the 1850 census, the Thomas Lewis family was living in the 5th Ward in the city of Pittsburgh. The census lists Thomas Lewis, age 58; Margaret Lewis, age 61; David Lewis (shoemaker), age 27; Lewis Lewis (laborer), age 22; Evan Lewis (laborer), age 21; Eleanor Lewis, age 17, and; John Lewis, age 10. All were born in Wales, with the exception of John, whose birthplace is given as Ohio. There were two Thomas Lewises who filed naturalization papers in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, during the 1840s. It is not known if either is this Thomas. The first filed his Declaration of Intention on 2 January 1844, and the other on 14 October 1846. Both gave their birthplace as Wales. Thomas Lewis' will was written on 14 March 1854, and was probated in Gallia County, Ohio, on 25 May 1854. He left his estate to his wife, Margaret, including the northeast quarter of section 29, township 6 (Raccoon), range 16, consisting of approximately 40 acres, which would go to his son David after Margaret's death; the northwest half of the northwest quarter of section 18, township 6, range 16, consisting of approximately 80 acres, which his executor, David Lewis, was to sell to support Margaret, and; lot 44 in the town of Centerville in Gallia County. He also mentioned his other children and his grandson, John Howell. Margaret Lewis sold the lot in Centerville to A.S. Combs on 11 July 1865.

James and Charlotte Baldwin Russell were married by Dr. Francis Silver, who later served as the administrator of the estate of Charlotte's father, Samuel. Charlotte Baldwin Russell was received by letter at the Salt Creek Baptist Church in Muskingum County, Ohio, on 3 September 1840. She is also recorded as becoming a member by letter at the same church on 3 September 1842. She was "excluded" by the church on 2 December 1848. She may also be the Mrs. Russell who was baptized by the church on 2 October 1831 and dismissed on 2 August 1834. In 1880, she was living in Washington Township, Muskingum County, Ohio, with John and Matilda Mitchlett. In the 1900 census of Perry Township, Muskingum County, Ohio, Charlotte's son, Samuel, gave her birthplace as Virginia.

It is possible that Rogers Cotter was born in Kilmichael, County Cork, Ireland, since his father was Vicar there from 1784-1797. Rogers Cotter is identified in his 1810 marriage record as "Rogers Cotter of City of Dublin Esquire." He attended Trinity College, Cambridge (matriculated 1806, but did not graduate), and later graduated as a physician and surgeon from Trinity College, Dublin, and then the University of Edinburgh, on 1 August 1815. His dissertation was entitled "Dissertatio medica inauguralis de tympanita," and was published in Edinburgh in 1815. He entered the army as a surgeon's mate in the West Meath Militia on 26 March 1811. He was assistant surgeon from 1817 until 1829, when the regiment disbanded. He was also surgeon and physician of Balinacaryge Dispensary. He published "The Fables of Aesop, in Latin hexameter verse translated from the original Greek," in Dublin in 1833. Rogers Cotter and his family emigrated in 1835. They sailed on the ship Tallahassee, originating in Ireland, and departing ultimately from Liverpool. The ship arrived in New York on 8 July 1835. The following family members are on the passenger list: Rogers Cotter, no age given; Mrs. (?) Cotter, age 39; James L. Cotter, age 17; George L. Cotter, age 19; John R. Cotter, age 13; Lydia Cotter, age 15; Annabella M. Cotter, age 11, and; A. Cotter, age 1 (female). Upon their arrival, Rogers stated that his destination was Ohio. However, he went instead to Ontario, settling in Toronto Gore Township, Peel County, Ontario. There is no record to indicate that he ever went to the Park Hill, Ontario, area with his sons. On 28 September 1835, he applied to purchase Lot 12, Concession 10, of the Gore of Toronto (Clergy Reserves), but the lot was not for sale. He was described as a "Doctor of Medicine and Surgeon," and "lately arrived in this province with a numerous family." Rogers Cotter is listed in the 1837 census of Toronto, Gore Township, York County, as "Dr. Cotter," living at Concession 10, Lot 12, in the Gore of Toronto. On 9 July 1839, he applied to purchase the same lot, where he had been living as a lessee. Rogers Cotter is listed in "The City of Toronto and the Home District Commercial Directory and Register with Almanack and Calendar for 1837." He appears on page 38 in a list of physicians and on page 162, as living in the Gore of Toronto, Northern Division, Concession 10, Lot 12. Rogers Cotter may have been the Cotter (first name not given) who was buried in McGillivary Township, Middlesex County, Ontario, on 23 September 1845, age 60.

The address given on the baptismal record of his son, George Sackville Cotter, is Strawling Lodge. The baptism took place in Clane, County Kildare, Ireland.

According to family tradition, Rogers Cotter "ran off with a parlor maid." Living with James Cotter at the time of the 1860 Clark County, Ohio, census was a 66-year-old woman named Anna Cotter, who may have been his mother. The baptismal record of her daughter, Mary, states that Arabella's name was Isabella Ann. Isabella is also the name given on the marriage record of her daughter, Annabella, to Amos Barber. Her maiden name may have been Lyne.
