Daniel Magruder served in the United States Army during the Civil War. He first enlisted on 1 October 1861, in Company L, Sixth (West) Virginia Infantry, and was discharged on 17 September 1862. On that same day, he enlisted in Company I, 15th Regiment, West Virginia Volunteer Infantry, and was mustered into service on 11 October 1862. He was discharged as a First Lieutenant on 6 April 1864.
